Head Start

The Southside Early Childhood Center offers comprehensive child development services to families with children age three to four, including those with disabilities.  

Serving 151 students, the center-based component is housed within the main building in  eight (8) separate classrooms. Each 3K classroom is made up of 17 three year olds supervised by two (2) teachers.  Each 4K classroom is made up of 20 four year olds supervised by two (2) teachers.   

Head Start is designed to offer comprehensive services and family support which includes:

 Ø  Education: age appropriate educational activities, early child growth and development, and prenatal support

Ø  Community Services: early intervention, referral services, and  positive child discipline strategies

Ø  Safety & Health: child and family mental health issues, children's dental care needs, and preventive health services

Ø  Nutrition: encourage family-style settings, nutrition education, and accommodate the feeding requirements of each child, including special dietary needs

Ø  Family Engagement: opportunities to serve on our parent committee, health advisory committee, policy council, and other volunteer opportunities

Splash into Pre-K is the curriculum utilized in the Head Start 3K and 4K classrooms.  This is a research-based program for early learners that addressed the changing needs of young children, promoting the idea that learning is fun. Splash uses intentional play and other high-interest activities to engage children while meeting learning goals.   The Splash into Pre-K program is aligned to key national and state standards including the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), HeadStart, and Race to the Top Early Learning Challenge.
